Notes from the teacher

Students in Room 15 have started Term Two with a focus on improving in all areas. We have been working on detailed goals to help us take the steps to achieving our aims. 

We are focusing our work in History and Geography on migration and our connections with Asia. To improve in this area students need to work on using 'empathy' and putting themselves in the shoes of the people we investigate. 

In writing, we are aiming for 'perfect paragraphs' to ensure we include detail that helps the story line, creates tension and suspense and lets us get a short story written in a set time frame. Our focus in Mathematics is measurement and geometry together with calculations using decimals. 

Students need to keep working to get more done on their Citizenship Portfolio. Being a good citizen is vital as we all share this planet we call home. 


 Just a reminder that we have our 'Super Scientist Competition' again this term. Students will need to find an experiment to demonstrate their scientific knowledge or prepare a scientific report on an area of interest in Science.

I encourage all students to complete the homework on the blog to help reinforce work done in class.

ANZAC class visits

We were very lucky to have Lieutenant Chapman and Leading Seamen Kissick come and talk to our class after the ANZAC assembly. The students were very interested in their medals and asked many questions about life in the Navy.

ANZAC Day

We held our school ANZAC Day assembly on Thursday 6th April. As part of our work on the symbols of the ANZACs we made poppies with out buddy class to wear at the ceremony as a mark of respect. We also made wreaths to be laid at the flagpole during the assembly. Some students dressed up in the costumes we used for our class assembly item then stood silently as an honour guard when the wreathes were laid. 




The Senior choir sang two beautiful songs and Shae Lyne read a letter she had written from the perspective of an ANZAC soldier at Gallipoli. This was a moving ceremony to commemorate those who were or are currently in the armed services.
  

  

   

Crazy Hair Day

On the last Wednesday of Term 1 students and staff participated in a Crazy Hair Day. Students made a gold coin donation as part of a fundraising ideas from the Term One Student Reps. There were some great designs but we particularly liked Pavitra's mermaid, very creative,

Room 15 and Room 21 Assembly Item

On Friday 31st March, our two classrooms presented their assembly item. Students recited the poem 'Sir' and dressed up to commemorate the soldiers and nurses. Our poem reflected on our pride in our sporting heroes but mainly our pride in the ANZAC Day parade. Students marched into assembly, recited the poem beautifully and presented facts about the ANZACs. It was a very moving assembly and matched perfectly with our work on ANZAC Day in the classroom. (Unfortunately, some technical issues mean the video of our performance is unable to be posted. )

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is held on the 21st March each year.The focus this year is cultural diversity. Prior to the day, students worked with their buddy class to make flags representing their different cultural origins.

 

On Tuesday morning we paraded around the undercover area dressed in costumes from many countries. We enjoyed viewing the school art display with 'Y' charts from every student.

 

 

 

During the day we discussed how we can live in harmony and celebrate our differences. We made a 'Welcome Tree' writing 'welcome' in different languages on the leaves of the trees.

Assembly Item

Room 15 and Room 21 are combining together for an assembly item to be held on Friday 31st March. As part of the item, students will be reciting an ANZAC poem. Please click on the picture to find the poem. Students will need to learn all the words and we will practise the rhythm at school. Costumes for the assembly are being discussed and we will update you with details soon.  Students are also asked to research information on ANZAC Day that we can use throughout the assembly.

Summer Sports Carnival

On Friday 17th March many Year Six students participated in a Summer Sports Carnival. Students practised during lunch and recess to improve their skills. On the day, it was great to see the way the students had improved and worked together as a team. Congratulations to the Softball team and Volleyball 'A' team for winning a trophy. All other teams played well and were a credit to our school.

Natural Disasters Report

Students have been finding out about natural disasters as part of our Science program. They had to research and make notes before writing a report in their own words during our 'Big Write'. Click on the picture to read a few examples from the class.
