Welcome to Term Four

This is the final term at primary school for our Year Six students. Lots of things are happening this term. We start off with dancing, then camp and swimming. Portfolios have been submitted and students are now preparing for Super Scientists. We are heading towards graduation at a rate of knots whilst continuing to prepare students for high school. I encourage students to use these last weeks well and keep up with all the learning taking place.

We have a Pre-Service teacher, Mr Attwood in the class from Week 2 to Week 7. The students got to know him last term and are now enjoying many learning activities with Mr Attwood in charge. 

Please enjoy a preview of our dancing from lessons at the beginning of term. We certainly have some excellent dancers in our class. I'm really looking forward to the Graduation evening where we can all show off our skills.

Learning Journey

A big thank you to all those parents who were able to attend the Learning Journey on Tuesday of Week Ten. The students loved explaining about activities that happen in the class and letting you know what they have learned. I noticed many students teaching Numero to their parents - a game we love in our class which is helping us build up our mental maths strategies.

Test books should have gone home after the Learning Journey. Could I remind parents to sign their child's test book and get them returned to school as soon as possible.

Interschools Carnival

On Friday of week 9 those students selected to represent our school participated in the interschools carnival. There were many individual examples of excellence in sport with several students winning championship or runner up champions in their division. Wattle Grove were the overall winners for the carnival. Thank you to Mr Sherlock and Mrs Oliver for their organisation and also Mr Williams, Mr Querios and Mrs Kelly for being assistants with the set up and helping me during the day.

Life Education Van

At the beginning of Week Eight students attended the Life Education Van for some information on smoking (part of our Health program). The students were really engaged with the topic and have found out lots of facts about smoking and cigarettes.

Athletics Carnival

We had a fabulous time at the sports carnival on Friday of Week Seven. Luckily the weather was good, cloudy but no rain. It was great to see all the students competing. We saw many examples of good sportsmanship and some very close races. At the end of the day Purple Faction won the day. Congratulations to everyone who took part, cheered or assisted on the day and a special thank you to Mr Sherlock and Mrs Oliver for their fabulous organisation.

Book Week

Week 6 was all about books. We made an activity for our buddies involving a treasure hunt with map and clues to find the treasure ( a book to share) at the end. We all had a great time hunting for treasure.

On Thursday, many students took the opportunity to swap some books with other students. They handed in those books they had maybe grown out of and came away with a new book to read. The Book parade was on Friday with everyone dressed up as their favourite character. Thank you to all the families who supported students with the book swap and dress ups for our book parade.

Merit Certificate and Literacy Pro certificate Winners

Congratulations to Ali, Jalen and Jin-Ai on earning a merit certificate at our Senior Assembly on 17th August. 

Congratulations also to the Literacy Pro certificate winners at the last assembly. Keep up the good reading.

Cross-Country

Cross - country happened at the end of Week 5. Luckily, students had managed to practice for the race between the rain showers over the previous weeks.  Those students who qualified for the event tried their best to keep running the whole distance without stopping. Congratulations to all students who participated. 
We are now busy preparing for the Sports Carnival in Week 7. Jumps and Throws are planned for Wednesday morning and the carnival on Friday. Students love having family their to cheer them on and we hope to see many of our families on the day.

Science Week

We had a fabulous time focusing on Science during Week 5. We found out interesting information about Science in our "Did you know" slides, especially about our planet and the solar system. On Wednesday afternoon Mr Sanderson organised a Science Tabloid afternoon with lots of different activities. 

In Year 6 we made rocket balloons, paper aeroplanes and helicopters, built amazing towers and tasted yummy ice cream we made ourselves, using ice and salt. It was a great afternoon. Students also got to take part in a Science patch design, Science Quiz and paper aeroplane competition. A big thank you to Mr Sanderson for all his work helping us celebrate all things Science during the week.

NAIDOC Incursion

In Week Two, as part of our work on the aboriginal people of Australia, we learnt more about the first people of Australia. We have been talking about Australia's history and the roles famous indigenous women have played in promoting the aboriginal people. We had an incursion by the Water Corporation,which talked about learning from the aboriginal people about how to look after the land and water. We looked at stories through pictures and symbols. In class, we have been writing biographies of famous aboriginal women and making timelines around the themes of the NAIDOC Week each year.

Term 3 Student Representatives

Congratulations to all the new Student Representatives for Term Three. Special mention to Chelsea I, McKenna, Ali, Nyima, Lachlan, and Jin-Ai from Room 11. The reps are learning about their new duties and have already held a School Council Meeting and assembly. I look forward to working with the team this term.

Road Safety

At the end of Term Two, students entered a competition run by the West Australian Newspaper. The students had to design a poster to promote road safety. We had been learning about many rules and myths surrounding road safety, as part of our work in Health. The students really enjoyed using their computer skills to design a poster and had to think about what elements to include to persuade the audience and make their information stand out. The results of the competition will be in the West Australian later this month.

Welcome back to Term 3.

It promises to be another busy term with Book Week, Sports Carnival, My School Rules competition plus our normal program. I'm looking forward to a wonderful Term Three.

It was good to get back to school after enjoying my extended holiday in Europe. I had a wonderful time visiting Italy. It was great to be immersed in the beauty, history, food and language. Some photos below to show you all this beautiful country. It was great to have the opportunity to cheer on my son, and the Australian U23 team, at the World Championships in Ivrea. Hopefully the language skills I've been practising whilst away will flow on into the classroom.
