Aussie Day

On Friday of Week 2, the school celebrated Australia Day by dressing up with an Australia theme. In class, we have been investigating how we celebrate our national day and how New Zealand, one of our nearest neighbours, celebrates their day. We compared and contrasted Australia Day and Waitangi Day. We found that we had a lot in common with each other but also some key differences. Students showed their information in a Venn Diagram.

Parent Information Evening

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Parent Information Evening in Week Three. 

At the meeting I went through the school and class routines and expectations for the year. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, via the diary or by arranging an appointment. On the evening we handed out the Year Six standards for Literacy and Numeracy. For those unable to attend a copy of the standards was sent home with your child. 

Senior Assembly Week 4

Congratulations to Mr Sanderson and Mr Sherlock for all their assembly items, particularly the song "It's Hip to be Square".

At the assembly, Rafi, Hannah, Luke and Yasaman received merit certificates for all their hard work in the previous weeks.













Further congratulations are due to Jazib who was the first student in our class to achieve a Literacy Pro Certificate - Blue. A big congratulations to those students who did quizzes and achieved a 100% pass rate, which enabled our class to win the Literacy Pro champions trophy. Keep up the good reading everyone.

STEM

During recent STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities, the students made a seismograph out of items easily found around home and the class. This was a fabulous link to the work we have been doing on earthquakes and also linked to our writing task in Week Four. Please enjoy some pictures of the designs.

Parent Information Evening


The Room 11 Parent Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 19th February from 7:00 to 7:45pm. I look forward to seeing parents/carers and outlining the structure for our classroom. 

Please return the slip sent home with your child to confirm you will be attending.

Term 1 Student Representatives

Congratulations to the students in Room 11 (Rafi, Shiam, Yasaman, Alona, Michael, Kasimira & Hannah) who were appointed as Student Reps. For this term. I am looking forward to working with all the Year Sixes in this group. Job allocations will be sorted out later this week and a brief meeting will be held to explain all jobs. Students will also have a meeting with Ms Roberts to ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities and the school expectations.

Welcome to 2019

Welcome to Room 11's blog. I'm looking forward to working with all the students in Room 11 this year. Everyone seems to be settling in to new routines. My expectations of the class and our long-term goals were discussed for the year -

• ORGANISATION
• WORKING TOGETHER
• NOT BEING AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES
• BEING KIND TO ONE ANOTHER
• and importantly ALWAYS TRYING OUR BEST

Students have started working on their Student Representative Speeches. On Wednesday, we heard the first batch of students as they tried to persuade the Year Six staff and members from the Administration team as to why they should be chosen to represent the students of our school. The standard of speeches has been incredibly high and the staff have truly been impressed. We look forward to working with all the Student Representatives over the year.

On Friday morning, we announced the chosen Student Representatives for Term One, at a special assembly. When selecting Student Representatives we look for equal representation from all classes and a mix of abilities. This does mean that some students who delivered speeches may not be selected in Term One.

Graduation Evening



Congratulations to all Year Six students on their successful Graduation evening. All the students sang beautifully and acted responsibly throughout the presentations. The graduation song 'This is me" was a highlight for parents and staff.

 Congratulations to Isabella who was awarded the Citizenship Award.

 Congratulations to Toby who was awarded one of the Science Awards.

Darling Range Learning Community Presentation Evening

On Thursday 22nd November we had the presentations for our Citizenship Portfolios and 'My School Rules' competition. 

Congratulations to the members of the 'My School Rules' team who contributed to our school winning this year. 


















Congratulations to all students who submitted a portfolio and project. Our three finalists, Shreya, Jacob and Isabella all received an 'Honourable mention' certificate, due to the high quality of their portfolios and projects although they were not one of the overall winners from all the schools on the evening.



Congratulations to Isabella from Room 11 for her terrific work on her citizenship portfolio and project.

Lesmurdie SHS Transition 

On Monday of Week Seven the students enjoyed an opportunity to attend Lesmurdie SHS as the last part of their transition to high school. Most students are now feeling confident and more prepared for next year with the chance to see how a high school works.

The students loved the chance to use the Bunsen Burners during a Science lesson.

Super Scientist Term 4

Throughout Week 6, students are required to present an information based on a Science concept, as part of our whole school Super Scientist Competition. This presentation should be no longer than 6(six) minutes in length. The main purpose of the presentation is to explain the science. Please be prepared early as we will be fitting in presentations around swimming.

 Your presentation will be assessed on:

·         the accuracy of the science content,
·         how clear your explanation is in your powerpoint
·        the detail and research shown in your background knowledge

·         your use of scientific language

·         your presentation and showmanship

·         your speaking skills

·         that you demonstrate engagement with the audience

Merit Certificate and Literacy Pro certificate Winners

Congratulations to James, Keagan and Naznin on earning a merit certificate at our Senior Assembly on 9th November. 

Congratulations also to the Literacy Pro certificate winners at the last assembly. Keep up the good reading.

Kalgoorlie Camp





Another terrific camp this year. The students loved all the activities and some of them have definitely got the 'gold' bug'.                             













We found out lots about the history of Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie and how the gold rush affected the growth of our state. It was great to visit the Kalgoorlie & Boulder Town Halls to see what government looks like in real life and fits well with our work on Civics and Citizenship.


  

Mostly we all enjoyed spending time with our peers. A highlight for most students was the trip to the Super Pit and prospecting for gold.
