Reports on different environments
Students have been researching the different biomes (very large ecological areas on the earth’s surface, with specific fauna and flora) around the world and were then asked to write a report on a particular biome that is found in Asia. We found out lots of interesting information to include in our 'Big Write' session. Please enjoy some samples by clicking on the picture below:

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is held on the 21st March each year. The focus is on cultural diversity and living in harmony. On Wednesday morning we paraded around the undercover area dressed in costumes from many countries. We enjoyed viewing the school art display of dream catchers with messages about how to live in harmony. During the day, we completed activities and discussed how we can live in harmony and celebrate our differences.
Buddy Class
On Wednesday of Week 7 students in Room 11 visited Room 14 to work with their buddies. We helped make flags together in preparation for Harmony Day on the 21st March. We have set up a regular reading session during 'Silent Reading' after lunch, with four students from Room 11 visiting to read with their buddies. We are all looking forward to working with our buddies over the year.

From the Teacher...
The class has settled in really well for the start of 2018. Already we have chosen Student Representatives and this week interested students nominated for Faction Captains. The results of this election will be announced at the Senior Assembly on Friday in Week 6.
Thank you to all parents who attended the Parent Information Evening in Week 3. It was lovely to see parents checking on the routines for the class. Those families unable to attend should have received a copy of the Powerpoint presentation with all the relevant information. Details on the School Standards to be achieved by the end of Year Six are on the blog. Should you wish to organise an appointment to discuss any concerns with your child or their learning please do not hesitate to contact me (notes in diary or ringing the office).
Could I please ask for your support in encouraging your child to complete the homework tasks set on the blog each week? Occasionally there may be additional finishing off work, particularly where a student has been absent from class, due to Student Rep. duties or other programs, eg. guitar, choir.
I'm looking forward to working with your child and their family to have a positive year with good growth in student learning.
Students have started an investigation with tomato plants to build on their understanding of the conditions for best growth for plants. This topic will also be linked with our writing and investigations into different environments in Asia and Australia.
One group has already discovered that salinity is a major problem for plant growth with all of their plants lasting about a week in the saturated solutions prepared. They are now very carefully looking after their control plant and will be investigating salinity issues.
The students have to be very organised with their investigations with regular jobs for all members of the group and measurements and observations to be made. The final report with analysis of the results will be completed towards the end of term - with hopefully some fruit to show for their efforts too!

Australia Day celebrations

On Friday of Week 2 the school had their own celebrations of Australia Day. Many students dressed up and donated a gold coin to a chosen charity. We had a discussion on choices of charities in Room 11 and will be working on this theme throughout the year. Our school motto is "Give to receive" and together with regular fundraising by Year Six students we hope to develop students citizenship skills. The money raised on Friday will be going to a charity that supports children - Act for Kids.

Congratulations to the students in Room 11 (Toby, Isabella, Halle, Sacha,
Angelo and Naznin) who were appointed as Student Reps. for this term. We
are looking forward to working with all the Year Sixes in this group. Job allocations
will be sorted out at the beginning of the week and a brief meeting will be
held to explain all jobs. Students will also have a meeting with Ms Roberts to
ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities and the school
expectations.
The Year Six staff and Admin have enjoyed listening to the speeches from most of the Year Sixes at the beginning of the week. The speeches presented were of a very high quality. They highlighted the values of the students and showed their commitment to taking on this responsible role. The balance of students will be presenting their speeches over the next few weeks. We will advise students of proposed dates once known.

Welcome back to a new year. Our Super Sixes have started the year really well.
During Week One we discussed the expectations for the class. We will work on our organisation skills and I encouraged everyone to work to their personal best. We have hit the ground running writing speeches for nominations to Student Representatives.
On Monday and Tuesday this week many students delivered their speeches to a packed audience of other Year Sixes and visits from Ms Roberts and Mrs Grainger. The standard was incredibly high, making it difficult to choose our first representatives. The assembly on Friday will announce our successful Year Six Term One Representatives. We look forward to seeing parents at the assembly.

Numero Competition
On Friday of Week 2 several students from Room 15 were part of the school Numero team. We had a fabulous morning working out challenges on an individual and team basis, then we played games and lastly the challenge of the scramble. Thank you to all parents for supporting the team and for the many who stayed to watch. We had some good success with at least one team placing in each event. Next year we hope to build on our success and have a team make the finals. A very impressive effort from everyone, particularly Year Three students whose competition was often three years older.
