Talk Time Homework Weeks 5 & 6

Over the next two weeks, we will be writing a persuasive text about whether winning is the main thing in sport and if there is too much pressure put on athletes to win. Please discuss this issue at home as preparation for writing. This is a timely topic with our current work on the Olympics, the footy season and our own sports carnival just around the corner. The homework prompt is found by clicking on the link HERE.

Message from the teacher

Welcome back to Semester 2.

Students have got straight back into work as this is a very busy term. We have just finished a writing unit to develop our narratives. I'm hoping students will be able to share their improvements in writing with you at the upcoming Learning Journey. The next focus in writing is persuasive texts. Details on the upcoming topic are in a separate post.

Projects on Antarctica are completed and many students have worked hard to follow the marking rubric. Some samples of projects are on a separate post.

Last week, we looked at chemistry, otherwise known as cooking. We made bread in class and observed the chemical reaction of yeast, which made the bread rise and caused bubbles. The bonus was, we got to test our cooking skills. The verdict was - yummy!

In Mathematics, we are focusing on fractions, decimals, percentages and algebra.

Congratulations to those students chosen for My School Rules teams. Sheldon, Steven and Ramon from our class were successful and will be competing during the term as we lead up to the finals. To improve students general knowledge, could I encourage students to watch the news (or BTN), documentaries and even read newspapers to stay in touch with what's happening around the world.

Lastly, can I please encourage everyone to keep up with all their homework, but particularly the reading and quizzes on our on-line programme. Students should also be collecting data for their citizenship portfolio.

Winter Carnival

On Friday 24 June, we took several teams from Years 5 & 6 to compete at Netball, Football and Soccer. The netball carnival was run from Midvale whilst the soccer and football was at Forrestfield. Congratulations to all teams for their participation. We had a couple of injuries on the day but that didn't stop our enthusiasm. Great to see Divya back at school working hard, even with a broken wrist.

WA Day

As part of our celebrations for WA Day we researched information on our state bird - the Black Swan. Students wrote reports on the Black Swan and we displayed our writing on the door.

Super Scientists

We all enjoyed sharing our science experiments and trying to explain the underlying science. Please enjoy some pictures of the students' experiments. Congratulations to Namita and Daniel who represented our class in the year level round. This has definitely got us motivated for more science next term, when we will be focusing on Chemistry.

Insulation Investigation

"We want to find out which materials have the best insulation properties. Which insulation keeps the ice cold or frozen for the longest amount of time."

In Australia, the first ice specifically for cooling food was made in 1851. Soon people bought big blocks of ice and put them in ‘ice chests’.
Gradually “icemen” began to take ice packed in hessian bags and sawdust around the city streets, delivering ice once or twice a week.

Today most homes have a refrigerator.

"Bubble wrap was a good insulator because it has bubbles of air trapped between the plastic. The polar fleece was also a good insulator because its texture also traps air between the bubbles. I know ice in water melts quicker and that’s why polar fleece was slightly better, it absorbs water."
