Principal's Challenge

Image result for earth and space sciences

Just a reminder that the Principal's Challenge is this week. Students have been practising their spelling words and mental maths in class and as homework. Notes on the subject of Earth & Space Sciences need to be reviewed and are based on the topic we have worked on in class. The champion class is decided on by the class average with a loading for the different classes based on size and ability. Our best chance of winning the Champion Class is if everyone works hard to improve their scores.

Tumbling Towers

As part of our work in Science and Design Technology the students participated in a challenge to build a straw tower using straws, paperclips, string and pins. They have come up with some interesting designs using the limited materials. The two-storey structures were then tested with weights to see which design holds the most weight and survives the earthquake, and its after shock.

Three designs survived the earthquake. It was great to see the students demonstrate their knowledge of structures and strong shapes (mainly triangles and hexagons) together with suspended floors that could move with the earthquake.

Roshan's design was made by Roshan and Aldrich. They used supporting braces
and a suspended floor so their structure could survive the earthquake.

Rishithai's design using a hexagonal structure was built with Kallaghn
             and successfully survived the earthquake.

Immanuel's design used the structure of triangles to build a successful design.
Together with Yusuf they built one of our tallest structures that survived the earthquake.

WA Day

We celebrated Western Australia Day on Monday, 5th June to remember the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829. As part of our celebrations of this day, students chose their favourite place in Western Australia and made a postcard for their buddy in Room 29 and vice versa. Students described the place and explained why they liked this part of Western Australia. We then got together with our buddy class to share our postcards. We all agreed that there are some fabulous places here in Western Australia.

Super Scientists

Student presentations for the Super Scientist competition were of a strong standard. Many students chose a Powerpoint presentation this year to demonstrate their understanding of a scientific concept. We had some very well presented items with many students sharing their passion for Science. Room 15 sent through Afnan, Roshini and Immanuel as our top science presentations to the year level challenge.

At the year level presentations, Asher from Room 21 blew us all away with his knowledge and demonstration of Stirling Engines, just pipping Afnan (presentation on the Fermi Paradox) as the Year Six nominee. Congratulations to all students for their wonderful presentations. Please enjoy some pictures from demonstrations below.

Life Education Van

Year Sixes are busy learning about how to make good choices and lead a healthy lifestyle. As part of this unit of work we are investigating the effects of alcohol and smoking on the body. We thoroughly enjoyed our session in the Life Ed van and learned lots about alcohol and how to make responsible choices. The students really enjoyed finding out the truth about some of the myths surrounding alcohol.

Cyber Safety

Students attended a session with Paul Litherland from Surf Online Safe about how to stay safe on the internet. This is a very important subject particularly for Year Sixes as they head off to high school. The talk was very informative and the students took lots of good information away.

The Golden Key

Students have been working hard to develop more detailed, cohesive and exciting writing. For our writing of the narrative, 'The Golden Key', we focused on a perfect paragraph for the opening paragraph. We have identified what needs to be in each paragraph and how to grab the reader's attention. Click on the picture to see some examples of our paragraphs.
