Zoo Excursion

We all had a fabulous day at the Perth Zoo on Wednesday. The weather was terrific and we saw many animals. One of the highlights was the Asian experience where we listened to information about Asian animals and how they have adapted to their environment. We then went off to discover the answer to questions on an animal. Many students had a fabulous opportunity to touch a snake.

We really enjoyed the visit to the Orangutan Enclosure. We had been reading about these animals and their adaptions. They have incredibly long arms for swinging in the trees, which we don't, but that didn't mean we couldn't have a go at swinging on ropes. They have opposable thumbs which helps them pick fruit just like us, but bigger. They are also very inquisitive and have lots of things to do in their enclosure.

We also loved the Gibbon Section especially when the monkeys were interacting with us through the glass, probably our favourite section.

Viewing the elephants was also a big hit. We did a comparison of the enclosures for the elephants and orangutans, to identify the different features of the designs that kept the animals healthy and happy.

We finished our trip with a walk through the rest of the Asian Rainforest, visiting the Sun Bear, Red Panda and Komodo Dragon. We then returned to meet up with the other classes via the Australian Bushwalk. Mrs Lowther got to see her Numbat at last.

The traditional zoo photos show the students near the statue of a Gorilla and its baby. Yet another reminder how closely related humans are to the apes.

A big thank you to all the parent helpers for all their assistance on the day. We hope they enjoyed the visit as much as our class did.

Geometry

The students have recently finished working on their understanding of 3D shapes. They looked at their properties and nets to get a better understanding of different ways of representing shapes. We enjoyed hands-on activities with skeleton shapes and making prisms and pyramids.

Term 2 Student Representatives

Congratulations to the students in Room 11 (James, Keagan, Chelsea S, Naveed,  Jackson and Paige) who were appointed as Student Reps. for this term. We are looking forward to working with all the Year Sixes in this group. Students have already successfully started their jobs and, met with Ms Roberts to ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities and the school expectations.
