We really enjoyed the visit to the Orangutan Enclosure. We had been reading about these animals and their adaptions. They have incredibly long arms for swinging in the trees, which we don't, but that didn't mean we couldn't have a go at swinging on ropes. They have opposable thumbs which helps them pick fruit just like us, but bigger. They are also very inquisitive and have lots of things to do in their enclosure.
We also loved the Gibbon Section especially when the monkeys were
interacting with us through the glass, probably our favourite section.
Viewing the elephants was also a big hit. We did a comparison of the enclosures for the elephants and orangutans, to identify the different features of the designs that kept the animals healthy and happy.
We finished our trip with a walk through the rest of the Asian Rainforest, visiting the Sun Bear, Red Panda and Komodo Dragon. We then
returned to meet up with the other classes via the Australian Bushwalk. Mrs
Lowther got to see her Numbat at last.
The traditional zoo photos show the students near the statue of a Gorilla and its baby. Yet another reminder how closely related humans are to the apes.
A big thank you to all the parent helpers for all their assistance on the day. We hope they enjoyed the visit as much as our class did.
