ANZAC Day Service

We commemorated the ANZAC Day by holding a service on Friday 8th April, as the students will be on school holidays on the actual day, 25th April. The service was very moving and students showed their respect for those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today. In class, we have been finding out about the 'ANZAC spirit' and the events that make up this part of our history. Students have used the information to empathise with the soldiers and write a letter home from the war front. Audrita and Sheldon were chosen to read their letters at the service. Click below to read their letters.
ANZAC Letters

As part of our work about the ANZACs we made poppies with our buddy class which we then wore, together with some rosemary, to show remembrance and respect for the soldiers who died.

We also made a wreath with our buddy class which was carried at our ANZAC ceremony by Steven and Chandrea from Room 15, and Kayla and Blake from Room 14.

Holiday Homework

Over the holidays, could parents please help students to complete Section 1 about the family and citizenship at home. We are currently working on the other two sections in class, however, some assistance to complete the first section would be gratefully received. The students will be at different places as they have come from different classes and/or previous schools, so the aim is to get as much done on the first section as possible. Many students just need to do some adjustments whilst others will have more to do. Please click on the link below to find out the details.

Harmony Day 2016

On Wednesday, 23 March the school celebrated Harmony Day. The theme this year was “Diversity is our strength’. In class we discussed our differences and the students reflected on how diversity improves our classroom, country and the world. I was very pleased to see many students dress up in their national dress or wear orange to promote this special day. The Harmony Day Parade was very colourful with a fabulous selection of music to keep us all dancing. The Art Installation created by Miss Randall and the students was terrific. The walls were decorated with messages of harmony on each brick. This is a fabulous celebration of our multi-cultural school and world and encourages us all to empathise with others.

Wow Writing

As part of our work on poetry, students wrote a poem using the rhythm and rhyme of the famous Australian poem “My Country” by Dorothea Mackellar. We brainstormed lots of ideas about Australia and analysed the original poem. Here is a selection of some of the students’ work.

Interschool sport – Summer Carnival

On Friday, 18 March we took several teams from Years 5 & 6 to compete at Cricket, Softball and Volleyball. We were a bit worried about the weather but the wind eventually dropped, the rain stayed away and if fact we all got quite hot. It was a pleasure to be involved with the different teams and all the students behaved in the Wattle Grove Way.
I was especially proud of the Volleyball teams as this is a sport we play rarely. The students were all very supportive of each other and showed good sportsmanship. Both teams improved as the carnival progressed and all improved their skills. It was a bonus to discover the “A’ team had won their part of the competition.

Congratulation to all competitors.

Senior Assembly 3rd March

Room 15 was the first Senior Assembly for 2016. Our assembly item was the recital of a famous Australian bush poem – “Said Hanrahan” by P J Hartigan. The students did a fabulous job reciting this poem with feeling and emphasis. A special mention to those students who took on the challenge of using a different accent to show the characters – Well done Jake, Doyle, Samara and Divya.  Thank you to Miss Randall and all the students who gave up their free time to complete the fabulous backdrop of a traditional country Australian farm, it looked fabulous.

Congratulations to Merit Certificate winners; Sai, Steven and Syreeta. In addition, Namita and Densil won the Science Awards and Chandrea and Lucy won the Values Award for demonstrating respect.
